Rodeo Monkey

I actually saw a monkey-riding-the-dog act several years ago at a rodeo in El Centro, Ca. The monkey was definitely attached to the dog, and not by choice. The monkey spent the entire act struggling to get off and looked upset and frightened. It did not look like it was having a good time at all. Looked cruel to me.

Take it from an animal trainer, pigs are easier to train than you might think. The monkey is trained to hold on. It just looks like he is the one in control. The dog is truly doing most of the work.

I once saw an act in Grand Prarie Texas where monkee's dressed as jockeys rode on racing pigs. The Monkey's obviously trained to do this, the pigs, not so much. It was hilarious to watch, and the monkey's seemed to appreciate the attention from all the kids, and the pigs seemed excited about just being pigs. It must be a hoot to watch these little rascals saddling up a border collie.

What about kudos to the dog? The border collie is the amazing one in this pair. All the monkey has to do is hold on, the border collie is doing all of the work.

This monkey needs to eat a samach! Scary. I just hope he is having fun and not being forced in to this act. If so, good for him, but it looks as if he is on his last leg, this monkey. He looks half dead and very thin. Maybe he feel pressure to be thin, being famous and all! lol!

Apparently the person who said the Monkey is TIED to the dog doesn't know what he is talking about....I saw this from the rodeo floor and the monkey rides the dog of his own free will - there are no straps and no forcing this...when he is done - he comes back to the owner who holds him and tells him how good he did......so unless you have facts or you were there (like I was) quit spreading trash! I mean for goodness sake, monkeys like to have fun too!

The monkey is tied onto the dog. He has no choice in the matter. I've seen this act and it's disgusting. It may look cute and hilarious, but it's no fun for the monkey who's body sometimes get slammed to the dirt if he doesn't "lean into the turn" just right.

That is so cute. I have seen film of the monkey jumping on the dog to go for a ride when the owner wasn't standing near by. The monkey obviously loves it. It is interesting how many animals like to go fast. Like dogs in cars or on surf boards. I had a cat that used to jump in a plastic tote plate his feet against the sides so he could go "around the world" where I would spin him like a ferris wheel. He wanted to do it all the time. He loved the thrill of motion. Swinging around is a monkey's natural movement. It is not tied to the dog. So this probably the monkey's equivalent to a human riding an amusement park ride. More fun to the Monkeys

I think this is great. The man, the dog and the monkey look happy and healthy and I can just imagine what happiness they bring to people. Even when a dog is trained, the spirit is broken a little - for that matter when a child is trained to eat proper foods, use the toilet, watch before crossing the street the spirit is broken a little. These are just two beautiful, trained animals who bring joy to many. Many blessing to the man and his dear animals.

Does anyone actually see the straps holding the monkey that some of these people are whining about, I don't? Like any domesticated animal (this monkey has been with the owner for close to 20 years), these animals have been trained by their owner to do this; no different than agility or show dogs. Most kids probably wish they were treated as good as these animals are.

Hmmm.... I seem to remember we allegedly "evolved" from monkeys... so if we can smile and enjoy riding horses and cows in rodeos, why can't they. What exactly is it "monkeys by nature" are supposed to do? For that matter, what exactly are we "by nature" supposed to do? I somehow doubt that by nature we are intended to do a lot of things, yet we do, and we enjoy them! Why can't the monkeys! Maybe YOU are the one that is cruel to animals by depriving them of wordly pleasures that we so enjoy!
