Now the horses are shipped to Canada or Mexico but they still get slaughtered (and are still eaten) but instead of using “captive bolt” they just stab at the horse with a knife until they get lucky and severs the spinal cord or the horse bleeds to death. Reminds me of animal shelters "heart-sticking" to kill dogs. Maybe its a relief after being crammed into a trailer - without food, water & rest stops in the extreme heat/cold.
There'll be plenty more horses looking for homes with the price of hay going up, and the availability of shavings going down - it'll get all those small time boarding places to sell to developers so there will be less land at higher prices. Imagine living one of those big houses overlooking the forest preserve - as long as the coyotes don't eat my designer dog.
The humane way to dispose of unwanted horses is to pay the vet to put it down, then pay a knacker to haul it away - then those Europeans can't eat our horses. Does it really stop the problem?

Be careful what you ask for....
Without getting into the vegetarian argument; while in Europe where horsemeat is sold in grocery stores, I was told that horse meat is not only low in fat but the meat is tender no matter what age the horse was.
The horse has served a useful life and it continues in death when used to feed humans and zoo animals. Renderings produce gelatin (think canned hams, jell-o, etc) and fats are used for things such as lipstick.
Anyone on hormone replacement therapy has heard about Pre(gnant)Mar(e)(Ur)ine which is obtained from, as the name says, pregnant mares - what do you think happens to the foals?
Well, as long as they are shipped to "Minnesota" they can be crammed into a double decker trailer thanks to all of us who sent e-mails to back the bill which outlawed double decker trailers being used to transport - "horses for slaughter." Guess we all meant "horses."

The rest of the country does not feel the same way as Huckabees' little part of the world. The rest of the country will not elect him. He put his own hoof in his mouth.
It is disgusting that he would even think about eating horsemeat. I am going to actively campaign against him jutt because of this. It is an insult and an affront to the millions of Americans who are lobbying Congress to get the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act passed that would stop the transport of horses across our borders for slaughter for human consumption. I will not support a candidate who goes against the wishes of a huge majority of Americans' wishes. He doesn't need to apologize or clarify. I wouldn't believe him any way.

Sorry, but I just can't believe he would even admit to it.
Polls indicate that 80% of Americans want to see the bills (Senate S. 311 and House H.R. 503) passed to END horse slaughter and transport. Sounds like 80% of Americans are NOT going to like Huckabee!
HORSE EATER HUCKABEE! This is a county that does not eat horses, and a HUGE majority find it horrific that such a thing even happens. Can this man be the religious person he claims to be with the morals he has? Eats horses, and covers up for his dog killer son! What's next for our country? This country is supposed to be about integrity and honor, and Huckabee doesn't have either of those things. He must have the Huckabee revised version of the Bible. The one that says "Forget about only eating red meat in times of famine, eat red meat in times of GREED!!" Please America. SAVE OUR HORSES!!!
Well, if u actually make money and dont want to pay higher taxes so the government can throw it away at special interest groups then vote for the guy who eats horse!
I just read on justsaywhoa.org that the three remaining US horse slaughterhouses have been closed for now. One in Dekalb, IL is appealing the decision. The website for Veternarians for Equine Welfare illustrates that horses are still exported to Mexico and are treated far worse than they were here. The horses are repeatedly stabbed in the spinal cord in an effort to paralyze them prior to drawing and quartering them. The horses are alive during this process. Perhaps Huckabee's favorite dish will draw attention and awareness to this horrific practice.
Horses were not slaughtered humanely. Horses had to be rendered unconscious prior to slaughter. In order to do so steel rods were injected into their brains (you cannot consume a euthanized animal because your liver cannot break down the toxin). The horse was then strung up by a back leg and gutted. Sometimes they would wake during the process of being strung up and gutted because the steel rod was not entirely effective. Furthermore, the horses were treated horribly on the way to the slaughterhouse. They were often unfit to travel due to illness and lameness. The were transported in over crowded, often illegal (double decker), livestock trailers. Many were not afforded food and water. There is nothing humane about horse slaughter.
In the Iowa caucus, the Up and Coming Generation has spoken. We do care. We will vote. It's time our government listens to the American people on ALL issues.
