• 46. i feel like people have a right to their opinion but this is pitiful... just because you get pregnant and the father isnt around doesnt mena you will be nothing in life. me and my family was raised with no father all 6 of us and my borther lives in virgina with his 6 children in a 2 story town house never been on welfare and has a couple degress... you can always make it no matter where you live.. im 18 i live in the hood honey and still have a high school diploma on my way to finishing my associates degree and im pregnant... i also used condems and birth control....while you sitting here talking you could be speaking on one of you ancestors who probably had to use govenment help to keep you alive .... getting help from the govenment is not bad they take the money and use it for unnesscessary reasons anyway... when i work they take taxes out my check just like they do everybody else.... im just getting it back

• 48. I was married when I hd my daughter and her father walked out on me and refuses to pay child support. I give all single mothers credit because they do what they have to for their children and anyone who has a problem with us single mothers all I can say is get bent.

• 49. Parents of single women are a burden on the tax payer. In order to prevent future charges to the tax payer, the father of children (born out of wedlock), if he cannot pay child support, should be castrated. The mothers should agree to be spayed as a condition for getting child suport and also as a condition for giving these children up for adoption!

• 50. California has almost a million children who get SCHIP. SCHIP is health care for poor children: it's funded by taxpayers. Whether the parents were married or not, they chose to have children they couldn't afford. The children are a burden on society. One of the poor mothers that I saw riding at the front of the train, (which by law is for handicapped people), looked like she could have been an Olympic athlete. Healthy young women should be working, they should contribute to society: they shouldn't be a burden on society.

• 51. I disagree with just about everyone on this board. Marriage is not for everyone. In today's society, just because you're married does not mean that you're going to be together for the rest of your lives. Look at the rate of divorce. If a woman has a child out of wedlock, what's the big deal? If she's happy and in love with the person she's dating or engaged to than I see no problem with it. Just because she does not have a ring on her finger does not mean that she won't be a good mother. Sure there are a few who will get pregnant to live off the system, but the majority of women who have babies out of wedlock can support themselves. No where does it say that an "unwed" mother cannot raise a healthy and happy child. And I seriously doubt that most of these women got pregnant to keep the person they're with.

• 52. The poor girls/women who get pregnant do so intentionally. It's a way of life. I've seen hundreds of them on local public transportation. They have cheap strollers; they leave dirty diapers at the train stations; they smoke in front of non-smoking signs; they eat on the train and about half of their food ends up on the floor of the train. I saw one unwed mother get on the train from the handicapped platform. She barged on the train ahead of a woman who was so handicapped I thought she was going to fall down while leaning on her cane. In some communities, everyone plans on going to college. In other communities, girls plan on getting pregnant to get welfare.

• 53. Oh and btw, the reason why blame isnt placed on the males is easy. Both males and females should be responsible for being safe but that said, these women obviously did not do there part and frankly they are the celebrities so of course the camera falls on them. The reason the females receive labels as one person said is because half of the people you see on these celeb gossip sites are little teeny boppers or young adults who have created the perception of them being a whore by how they dress, act, how many guys they are frequently seen with and in some cases have fricken sex tapes. So this isnt an issue of one sex being mis-treated. This is an issue of people choosing to be in a profession that gets attention and then creating a public perception. So when something like getting pregnant happens....its a simple game of connect the dots in the world of media. If you don't want to be seen as a whore, don't present yourself as one.

• 54. Ya know, i suggest each and every one of you who have an opinion that you keep it to yourself and go back to what ever it is that do with yourselves all day. Face it, some people are not republican bible thumpers and are fine with raising a kid with no father. Deal with it. If your that worried, go rub your prayer beads and STFU. Why dont you spend this energy you put into celebrity crap into something that matter like the environment or hell i dont know, go volunteer at a bloody soup kitchen you self righteous catty whiners. Maybe do other mothers a favor and spend your time protesting a war. Maybe you could help save some mother out there Next time you wonder what makes a child disadvantaged , just cruise the blogs on a site like TMZ. If you have an IQ above a Cheerio, you'll see what I mean. Stop being catty judgey b*tches.

• 55. Tata People like you have helped tear down marriage. I think people who wait for marriage are more responsible and raise more responsible children. I may have something, hell many things, someone can talk sh&t about, but it surely isn't disrespecting my unborn children by bringing them in to a world of uncertainty as far as the person they would have as a father. Period, the end.

• 56. I think in this day and age if you get pregnant out of wedlock your stupid. There are MANY forms of birthcontrol out there, there is no excuse for teens or young woman to get pregnant. Learn to close your legs or take a trip to the doctor or drug store and get on something. Parents need to stop deneying there kids are haveing sex and get them on something and that goes for boys just as much as girls.

• 57. To Juliet: SO? Ashley Simpson has been married to Pete Wentz for a month but pregnant alot longer than that. Just because she comes from a former Preacher's daughter and Jessica Simpson was a supposed virgin when she got married doesn't mean Pete and Ashley are immune to having sex before marriage. I'm sure papa Joe saw to it that she married before she really started to show as if to "gild the lily" as the public is stupid or something. Call it what you want but I'm sure if papa didn't preach she would have had the title "unwed Mother" too. Too bad for the start of a marriage.

• 58. Reading these comments makes you realize what really is wrong in the world today. Saying 'you must be from the 40s' to excuse the loose behavior in today's world doesn't cut it. By saying a man is not important, or no man in the picture is no big deal has sadly diminished the role of a man in today's world, not to mention dismisses family values and short-changes a child who never knows a male figure. You can say it's no big deal, everybody does it, and it's "2008" but the repercussions from all the permissiveness is going to have effects that we can't yet really imagine. It's very sad. And about time we call a spade a spade and use the term "unwed mother" instead of cutesying it up with "single 'mom.'"

• 60. @jazzy: right on. 1. all kids that grow up without a loving mother and a loving father in loving family are disadvantaged. 2. it's not the kids fault in any event 3. there is no excuse I can think of for having a child "out of wedlock" (that is, without a loving mother AND father) 4. raising a child is hard enough under ideal conditions, to have a young woman feel that she can do it alone as well as she could do it with the help of a caring husband is patently ludicrous.
